Note:

 A rapid expedient project in order to have the most heavy payload, the maximum protection and the maximum speed for a twin-engined bomber. The design was promising but it was not tested: it was put to production from scratch, and it caused much fatalities among US crews in training. However, the Bri tish used it efficiently in the Mediterranean theater. It partici pated also in the Allied push toward Germany.

Un projet expéditif tenté par les Américains pour obtenir un bombardier bimoteur tactique pouvant porter la charge la plus lourde possible, la vitesse la plus grande et la meilleure protec tion disponible pour ce type d'appareil. Le projet était promet teur mais il fut la cause de nombreux accidents. L'esquisse fut produite en série sans être testée en prototype. Néanmoins, les Britanniques l'utilisèrent avec succès en Afrique du Nord et il participa à la poussée alliée vers l'Allemagne.
