The American Federation of Arts

The American Federation of Arts is a national, non-profit cultural service organization which assembles and circulates art exhibitions and film programs thoughout the country and abroad. The AFA Film Program circulates series of films on art and films as art, designed for presentation in museums, universities, libraries, schools, media, and art centers. Its first major circulating series devoted to film as art, A History of the American Avant-Garde Cinema, was released in 1976, and has been screened by over fifty organizations throughout the world. Other programs include the 1979 Whitney Biennial Film Exhibition, Unreal Time: Animation and Film Graphics, Superfilmshow! Film as Art for Kids, The Ruckus Films of Red Grooms, Kenneth Anger's Magick Lantern Cycle and Canadian Experimental Film in the Seventies. AFA has also published New American Filmmakers, a major distribution catalogue and service devoted to the independent American Cinema, based on selections from the first five years of the Whitney Museum's New American Filmmakers Series.
