The basic rules of Saxon Spanglish [cf. Rite]

    - cut redundant letters - retain silent letters that have a function 
       cut surplus double consonants [aply, acount] but retain double 
       consonants used to mark short stressed vowels [better, butter, appl]

     - stressed short vowels must be marked in multi-syllable words 
       The marker is a double consonant as in - enny better wimmen . . . 
      Rite exceptions: before soft ge/j, qu, r, and k  or before endings ity, ic, ology 
      RITE/Spanglish:  charity/cherrity  nomic/nommic  sycology/saicollajy
      NOTE: bizzy & bizness both have two consonants before the next vowel. 

    - there are no short terminal vowels:  sofa resume si silo very guru 
       but they can be unstressed ones in two syllable words: berry verry
      Excpetions: i and w [hook sound] which are pronounced as a mid lax vowel
         respond/rispond/responnd

     - stressed long vowels are doubled or use digraphs ae ie er ai ow yuu

     - stressed short vowels are follwed double consonants att, edj, ill, off, buck
       as in [ attituud, appathy, bizzy, suddenly ]. All other double consonants 
       are surplus and can be eliminated  [ aply, acount, alowance
      in other words we increase the length of a vowel syllable to show it is short

   - The only silent letter is Saxon is the [h] used as a marker in th, thh, ch, sh, zh
 

Rite adds a few more rules and gets a little closer to traditional English

  • Cut redundant letters [giv, hav, hed, dout, exept, ....]
  • Regularize short vowels [ mat/matter, hav/havving, sed/enny, it/pitty, wim/wimmen, on/offen,  up/upper, cook/cookking?, hum/hummd, munndane, munny ]
  • Regularize long vowels  (made, grate, like, rite, home, rode, huge, buty)
  • Regularize 3 consonants: F for the F-sound (far, grafic, laf), X for the /ks/-sound

  • Today, reading English aloud is a complex process based primarily on lexical memory and word shape recognition. The goal of rectified spelling is to get the spelling close enough to the correct pronunciation that when a page is read aloud by someone with no lexical knowledge who pronounces each letter according to the Saxon alphabet, it can be understood by a native speaker. Spanglish is completely or over 60% rectified.  All that is needed is a 15% respelling.

    All phonemic or alphabetic notations will respell 60% or more of the words in the dictionary. Check how many words in your dictionary match the pronunciation guide.  It will be less than 40%.
    Most phonemic reforms respell over 90% of the words, as below. The trick is to retain enough of the traditional shape or pattern to allow reading without a key.  Based on the low number of matches, one might agree with Twain,"English doesn't know how to spell."

    The Spanglish foniemic transcripshan system is wan av the fiu that can hanndl the schwa. Most merge stressed and unstressed mid lax sounds and represent them with [u- ugoe] & [i - pensil ].

    Although over 60% of the words have to be respelled to achieve 95% phonemicity, only 15% need to be respelled to regain some semblance of an alphabet.  Words whose pronunciation has changed substantially are respelled.  Those that are still recognizable when pronaunced according to the Saxon alphabet are not.  o =aw, oo =aw ea =eh ie =i: ou =aw-u [out] au =ae-u

    There are no silent letters in the Saxon alphabet.  have=ha-veh  give = gi:v-veh  sick=sicc
    Post accentual i become a schwi.  music does not have to be respelled miusick, miusic is ok.
    [y] is about the same as [i and ie], y must come at the end of a word or syllable as in [they].

    In a phonemic notation, words that rhyme are spelled the same.  ear rhymes are eye rhymes.  This is not the case with spelling pronunciation.  near eye rhymes are close enough.  Spanglish allows multiple spellings of the same sound.  berr = bear = beir so it is not a 100%  phonemic notation.  Spanglish attempts to look like TO: tear=tear, terror=terror/terrer,    bear/berr/bair/bare/bayer/bury - bear/berr/beir

    *luv/lvf was changed to love to improve the legitibility of handwriting.  With modern fonts this is no longer a problem
    .Since u is used for the unstressed u, the mid lax vowel must be marked.  love=luvv.  The unstressed u also tends
    to be short so it can also substitute for the vowel in would [wud/wwd].  Normally the w is used as in Welsh to
    indicate the vowel in hook.  hwk - huk - huup - hupp  [the four sounds of u]

    Several modifications can be made to bring this system closer to the traditonal system.  u could be
    replaced with oo.  I have resisted this move because oo should be a long o or awe.

    EAR RHYME-EYE RHYME PROBLEMS & REVERSALS
    gir gRl -gcrl  -  An example of a reversal.  "gear" = /gir/  while "girl" /gRl or g&rl/ = <gear-l> or /gih-erl/
    The pronunciation spelling of girl /grrl/ is gear-el.  The pronunciation of gear /gir/ is gehr.
    Perhaps these represent the way that the words were once pronounced.
    When the spelling pronunciations can be understood, the word does not need to be respelled.
    The goal of the reform is to get the spelling close enough to pronunciation that someone who knew only
    the 50 symbol Saxon alphabet [GP correspondence table], could transcribe a the written code - read aloud.
    If a passage can be read alound using just the alphabet, and understood by a native speaker.  Thata is
    good enough.
