| Interspel vowel fonemes by Valerie Yule |
Below I have set out the English vowel phonemes in Interspel, to clarify where alternativ spellings are posibl.
SPELLINGS OF VOWEL PHONEMES IN INTERSPEL.
Note: these fonemes are the sounds that distinguish words in the English language. Some are simpl speech sounds, some are diphthongs or may even be pronounced as triphthongs. The analysis is for pragmatic everyday use, not theoretical linguistics.
Fonèm, with words exemplifying spelling & spelling with vowel in final pozision of the word or syllable
The short vowels in English are always followed
by a consonant. They are always checked.
Hence they can never appear in the final position of a word or syllable.
Since or = awr, it seems inconsistent not to allow it to be used in lost and cost and wor and fot.

All of the long vowels are mutations of the continental grapheme-phoneme
correspondences.
A vowel shift is commonly indicated with an umlaut (double over-dot). In
fact umlaut means mutation.
Since the pronunciation of English vowels changed and the way they are
spelled did not, some convention is needed to
shown this. a=ah, but a umlaut = ei.
Such a convention would also work in a new orthography for English since
it would allow some vowels to be written
as mutations of the original sound. bät ï ë ü ö

Note that no clumsy 3-letr vowel sequences are required for sequences of vowel sounds, as in most proposals. Indeed, it would add to the evaluation of all spelling reform proposals if their proposers should always be asked to include a table showing how they would spell these 25 sequences of vowel fonemes in English words.
COMMENT ON TABLE 2. The first spelng for each foneme shows grav accents - which may not be posibl in email The second spelng shows digrafs that can be used insted, especialy for lernrs The third spelng shows how grav accents can be representd by colons where desired The third spelng shows singl vowel letrs used optionly in adult text where confusion wil not ocur The final spelngs show 'pozisionl spelng' when vowels ar in final place. This is economicl, reduces waste, and simplifies for readrs and spelrs The spelng balà rathr than balay can be used for French words where 'ay' look crude. The spelng as in bee is for nouns, making them longr and visibly distinct by comparison with pronouns, verbs and function words
COMMENT ON ALTURNATIV PRONUNCIATIONS IN TABLE 3. Note that grav acsents ar optionl to clarify pronunciations, and may usualy be omitd
creàt clear ìdea: clear = cle-ar ìdea shows vowels in final pozision
eon/creòl and gòing (boil): can be distinguishd with grav acsent
spesial, milion, vizions uzual - ar specimens of comn sufixes for words of clasicl orijin which can stay at this staje
boa oàsis: boa shows vowels in final pozision - try pronounsing them difrently!
quak quest quit quote: pronunsiations with qu, not chanjed at this staje
