The IPA vowels can be represented iconically as in Jones' vowel quadrilateral. The positions in the chart below relate directly to the points of articulation.

The diagram on the far left is the official way of representing the information in the table above. The diagram is more accurate in terms of articulatory positions and more detailed having a symbol for both rounded and unrounded vowels.

This chart represents
the same vowels
in a linear alphabetical order. It adds three combinations
au
oi ai which cannot be easily located in terms of a single coordinate
of tongue height and backness. Dipthongs glide between two positions.
Some people have difficulty reading tables so it is often helpful to display both formats. The linear chart adds frequency and tenseness. The unstressed mid central lax vowel [schwa] is missing. The 16 vowels include 3 combinations. |

In order to have the same number of symbols as there
are sounds in English speech, the developers of IPA agumented the

keyboards, IPA limited its use. To deal with this limitation, ASCII
IPA's have been developed. Kirshenbaum
and Wells [SAMPA] transcribed 100+
IPA symbols into ASCII.
