The IPA vowels can be represented iconically as in Jones' vowel quadrilateral.  The positions in the chart below relate directly to the points of articulation.
The diagram on the far left is the official way of representing the information in the table above.  The diagram is more accurate in terms of articulatory positions and more detailed having a symbol for both rounded and unrounded vowels.
This chart represents the same vowels in a linear alphabetical order.  It adds three combinations au oi ai which cannot be easily located in terms of a single coordinate of tongue height and backness. Dipthongs glide between two positions.
Some people have difficulty reading tables so it is often helpful to display both formats.  The linear chart adds frequency and tenseness.
The unstressed mid central lax vowel [schwa] is missing. The 16 vowels include 3 combinations.

On the SIL font
most of the special characters [top line]
are accessed by using
the upper case. There are many other special characters on this font, including macrons and brevs, but they are not as easily accessed.
A sample of an IPA transcription is shown
on the left.
Can you decode it?
In order to have the same number of symbols as there are sounds in English speech, the developers of IPA agumented the alphabet with special characters.
The idea was to have one and only one symbol for each important sound [phoneme].
Decode this.

An IPA transcription of continuous speech is very difficult to read especially if it is the speech of an unfamiliar dialect. Citation spelling in ita is much simpler. Princess
There are no caps in IPA.  This hybrid spelling scheme adds them.  There is a capital crossed D in Icelandic [D] but this notation ads an uppercase that looks more like the lower case. Pitman's  abondoned any attempt to match IPA.
By augmenting the alphabet with special characters that are not supported by standard keyboards, IPA limited its use.  To deal with this limitation, ASCII IPA's have been developed. Kirshenbaum and  Wells [SAMPA]  transcribed 100+ IPA symbols into ASCII.
Codes such as  transcribed only 40 or so that are needed for a phonemic representation of English.

Unifon [above] extends the alphabet by redefining the upper case letters. SAMPA and Kirshenbaum  also use a unigrafic code
