The chart above is the same as on page 1 but much more compact. The notation, Chekt Speling, is a variant of New Follick which eliminates cutting the redundant length marker on free vowels that are not followed by a consonant. "Hi: ni:dz me:." becomes "Hi nidz me."

Dual redundant notational systems (such as TO and NF) do not have a single unique (unigraphic) shape for 18 sounds. Some of these sounds are represented as blends ( eg, ai for I ) others are represented by having a silent letter, often an h or e, serve as a marker ( eg, ch for /tsh/, ae or a...e for /ei/ ).

All ASCII IPAs, including NF, use alternate notation for the unique IPA characters.

A key to understanding the vowels in IPA and in most Romance languages is recognizing that the the sound of A in these notational systems is the sound in *calm -- the sound that English speakers usually associate with the letter O (as in *ox) -- and the sound of I is the one English speakers usually associated with the sound of E (as in *he) or EE (as in *see).

With this new connection between shape and sound, it is possible to make sense of such blends as /ai/ as in *aisle [ah+eel] *hai lai,  *aikido, and *aioli;  and  /ei/ as in *eight [eh+eat], *veil, *vein, *weight, and *sleigh.

If  [A] is /ah/ then /ai/ is /ah+ee/ - *ice can be spelled *AIS & pronounced /ah-ees/.
If  [I]  is /ee/, then /ei/ is /eh-ee/ and *ace can be spelled *EIS
and pronounced /eh -ees/.

18 New Folik Vowels. The following 21 cell vowel quadrilateral illustrates the way that NF is able to represent 21 sounds with just 6 vowel letters and 2 markers: an extender and a schwapostrophe.

The Vowel Quadrilateral plots the vowels of American English according to the point of primary obstruction by the tongue in the articulation of the sound. Low refers not only to the position of the tongue but the jaw as well. Front refers to the front of the mouth. The high front vowels are also characterized by a closed jaw. Low front vowels correspond to an open jaw (or mouth).

Stress and the meaning of checked

The English vowels fall into two classes traditionally known as short and long (alternately known as checked and free). Owing to the contextual effect on duration following fortis and lenis consonants, traditional long vowels preceding fortis consonants can be shorter than short vowels preceding lenis consonants. Checked means not occurring in a stressed syllable without a following consonant. The checked vowels are index, elbow, ax, ox, up, and hook. These checked vowels are never open and this allows an easy type of positional spelling where the extender [:] is cut on long open vowels: by  mi  a  nu  tu:tu  (the terminal unstressed uh sound is represented as ' or a').

Notes

1. In addition to Portuguese, compare also, Greek, Spanish, and Italian orthographies.

2. Proposed new letters: Avian shaped epsilon 3 for /ei/ as in aviator. Dotless i to distinguish ih for ee. Bar i to indicate length and quality. Eel shaped epsilon to for ee. The augmented alphabet allows the bridging of the gap between English and Continental sounds. ei looks like both [ei] and [A]. An eel shaped E looks like both i: and ee.

3. For example, Dr. Yule believes that the TO [ow] should be substituted for the IPA [au]. Mr. Ascott objects to any deviation from IPA other than substituting for a non-ascii character.

4. A phoneme is a range of sound values that are treated as equivalent by a speech community. It is the minimal distinctive unit of speech sound.
