The paintings collection in
this exhibition was conceived to occupy a special place - a space I call
my non-gallery.
A non-galleries is not a room or building.
Its milieu is the imagination. Perhaps we all create non-gallerries as
we live our lives. There we hang the images most precious to us - those
which defy reality, express our deepest feelings, and give us hope. Therefore,
a non-gallery is never static.Time passes; the paintings change; and so
do we.
The paintings in my own non-gallery
appear traditional at first-a still life here, a landscape there. But each
painting holds surprises.Fruit reveals a human face, lemons suggest a pig,
and cities are offered for breakfast. Time and logic are suspended as the
Beatles wander a Victorian landscape and people turn into frogs, but only
when the moon is full.
These things can happen in a non-gallery,
you see, as we view the always-changing work, and the work, in turn, views
us.
