Wilkie Collins

(1824-1889) Collins was the eldest son of painter William Collins, and was raised in London, although he spent a few years in Italy with his father. Collins was educated as a lawyer, but never practiced. He wrote novels for over a 40 year span, enjoying a great deal of popularity. Collins had two common-law wives: Caroline, and Martha, who bore him three children.
