Hungarian Nationalistic Writings
Readers might be interested in the controversy over which territory and which people should be included in Hungary. As one of the losers of World War I, Hungary was reduced in size. Some of the authors of the following works want to annex Transylvania, claiming that their Magyar ancestors were the original inhabitants of the region. The Magyars arrived in the Danube valley in the late 9th century, however. They ignore that, of course. They are very passionate about their desire to recreate pre-Treaty of Trianon Hungary. There are other views, of course. Romanians are not particularly anxious to have their country dismembered.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that much of this part of the world is mixed ethnically. Although science teaches us that we are all cousins, human egos want to see differences.
For different views of this controversy, see History of Romania. For background on early Magyar history in Europe, see Macartney, Hungary. For several years, Romanians complained about the publication of these materials via the Web. The webmaster even received some threats. When asked to supply uncopyrighted materials or materials for which publication rights have been given, the Romanians did not reply. Complaining is easier than work, of course.
